How to find the right tile flooring

Whether you want to upgrade the flooring in the kitchen, bathroom, or other space in your home, you can't go wrong by choosing ceramic or porcelain tile. These time-honored materials are durable, and they're easy to clean, too. Both types of tile come in many attractive styles that give room decor a boost. You can find a wide selection of ceramic and porcelain tile at Hailo Flooring. Our tile shop in Rancho Cucamonga, California, opened in 2010.

Clay-based materials

Ceramic and porcelain are both made of clay, but there are differences between them. Porcelain is composed of fine kaolin clay hardened in the kiln at a higher temperature than ceramic. Because of the lower temperature and its coarse clay composition, ceramic is a softer and less dense material than porcelain. Thus, ceramic is easier to cut when the floor is installed, and possibly, the amount of time needed to complete the job is decreased.

Types of porcelain

Since ceramic is porous, it must be glazed to repel water. Porcelain is naturally waterproof since it's difficult for a dense material to absorb moisture. There are two types of porcelain: color body and through-body. Color body porcelain tile has a texture or decorative pattern on its glazed surface, while the body is a solid color. With through-body porcelain tile, the unglazed surface and body of the tile are the same color. Porcelain is the most durable tile material available.
