How to prepare your subfloor for flooring installation

Imagine spending time and money on beautiful new flooring, only to see it buckle, warp, or crack because the subfloor wasn’t ready. That’s a nightmare you can avoid. Preparing your subfloor properly ensures your floors last longer and look better. It’s not just an extra step—it’s the foundation of a flawless flooring installation.

Clear out the space

Before anything else, remove furniture, rugs, and anything else covering the floor. If there’s old flooring, tear it out carefully. For carpet flooring, pull it up and remove the tack strips. If it’s tile, you may need a chisel and hammer. For glued-down vinyl or laminate, a scraper works best. The goal? Get the subfloor exposed so you can assess its condition.

Check for damage

Now, let’s see what we’re working with. Walk across the subfloor and listen. Do you hear creaks? Do you feel any soft spots? Those could mean trouble. Look for water damage, mold, or cracks. If you see nails sticking up or screws that aren't flush, now’s the time to fix them. Any issues left untreated will only cause bigger problems down the road.

Clean and level the surface

Dirt and dust might not seem like a big deal, but they can mess up your flooring installation. Sweep up debris, vacuum thoroughly, and wipe away any remaining dust. If your subfloor isn’t level, it’s time to fix it. Uneven subfloors can cause planks to separate, tiles to crack, and carpet to wear unevenly.

For wooden subfloors, sand down high spots and fill low areas with a leveling compound. For concrete, use a self-leveling compound and let it dry completely. A perfectly level surface makes for a seamless flooring installation.

Check moisture levels

Moisture is one of the biggest threats to new flooring. If you're installing over concrete, you need to check its moisture content. Use a moisture meter or tape a plastic sheet to the floor for 24 hours. If condensation appears underneath, your concrete is too damp. You may need a vapor barrier or dehumidifier before moving forward.

Install an underlayment if needed

Depending on your flooring type, an underlayment might be necessary. It can provide extra cushioning, noise reduction, and moisture resistance. For laminate and vinyl, underlayment smooths out minor imperfections. If you’re installing hardwood, a moisture barrier is essential, especially over concrete. Carpet installations may require a quality carpet pad for comfort and durability.

Secure the subfloor

Before installing your new flooring, make sure the subfloor is firmly attached. For wooden subfloors, screw down loose boards to eliminate squeaks. If you’re working with concrete, patch any cracks or gaps. This step keeps your new floors stable and secure.

Final check before the flooring installation

At this point, you’re almost ready. Double-check everything—cleanliness, levelness, and dryness. If all looks good, you’re set to start laying down your new flooring. Skipping steps might save time now, but it’ll cost you later.
